Brief History
As a capital city of Riau province, Pekanbaru originally came from a
small village called Payung Sekaki located near the bank of Siak river.
The village was founded by tribe of Senapelan so that Payung Sekaki
more knowledgeable by the name of Kampong of Senapelan. During that
periode, a system called Kebatinan was applied, where power was on-hand
a figure called Batin.
When Siak kingdom was ruled by the fourth Sultan, that was Sultan Abdul
Jalil Alamuddin Syah, he made Senapelan as a center of Siak kingdom.
Under his governance, commercial activities grew rapidly so that the
idea to establish a town arised.
After Sultan Abdul Jalil Alamuddin Syah had passed away, the plan to
establish the town was continued by his son, Sultan Muhammad Ali Abdul
Jalil Muazzam Syah (1784).
Since that time, precisely June 23, 1784, the name of Senapelan has not
been used any longger and changed with a new name, Pekanbaru.
Pekanbaru is splitted into 2 parts by Siak river which has estuary to
territorial water of Mallaca strait. It also connects Pekanbaru to
other towns alongside of its stream area. Surface of Siak river has red
chromatic color with current which looks calm in the middle of traffic
transportation of the river. It represents typical view in the river
stream which gets through this Pekanbaru city. Not far from port area
alongside Siak river, there was original city of Pekanbaru for the
first time.
Based on The Stipulating of The Governor of Sumatra in Medan, No. 103,
May 17, 1956, Pekanbaru was determined as autonomous area called
Harninte (New Town). In this year, It became a Municipal of Pekanbaru.
On January 20, 1959, based on Ministry of Home Affairs’ Decree No
Des.52/1/44-25, Pekanbaru was set up as a capital city of Riau province
which previously was Tanjungpinang and at the same time Pekanbaru
obtained status as Municipality Area II of Pekanbaru.
Geographical Position
Position of Pekanbaru is geographically very strategic, located in the
centre of Sumatra island and can be passed by land transportations to
all areas.
Situation of Nature
Evaluated from its geographical position, region of Pekanbaru lays in : 101' 27' Longitude East and 0' 31' Paralel North.
Regional Boundaries
As for administration boundaries of Pekanbaru city shall be as follows :
a. northside with Regency of Siak and Regency of Kampar
b. eastside with Regency of Siak and Regency of Pelalawan
c. southside with Regency of Kampar; and
d. westside with Regency of Kampar.
Pekanbaru city has entirety region is about 632,26 km2 which has
developed area reach only 12 %, so that the area which have not been
developed yet are 88 %, covering 12 Districts, those are District of
Pekanbaru Kota, Senapelan, Sukajadi, Limapuluh, Sail, Rumbai, Bukit
Raya, Tampan, Payung Sekaki, Marpoyan Damai, Rumbai Pesisir and
Tenayan. These matters are opportunities for investment in tourism area.
Climate
Pekanbaru has tropical climate with rainfall between 700-1200 mm/year.
Maximum air temperature is about 32,4’C - 34,6’C, and minimum
temperature is about 22,3’ C - 24,4’C.
The rain season is from September to Februari and dry season is from March to August.
Besides typical atmosphere of Siak river, Pekanbaru and its
surroundings have also some interesting tourism objects to be visited.
